Carla & Sam
The Star Inn, Harome | September 2021
We had the BEST time with these two - it’s certainly a privilege when asked by a wedding photographer to film their wedding. Carla is a wonderful photographer - check out her work here. The day was jam-packed with expertly designed details and activities; it was a dream! We also filmed Carla’s sister’s wedding, so getting to catch up with one of our previous couples was lovely. Watch Carla & Sam’s film and read all about their brilliant day below.
We have a severe soft spot for Yorkshire (Craig went to uni in Leeds & Charlotte spent a lot of her childhood in Yorkshire), so we had a lot of fun filming the area to really set the scene of their big day. The morning light in Helmsley was absolutely dreamy; a perfect September day.
Carla & Sam got married at the beautiful All Saints Church in the centre of Helmsley and had their reception at The Star Inn, Harome. The Star Inn is primarily a picture-postcard thatched roofed Michelin starred restaurant with a thirteen-bedroomed hotel just across the road. The food is to die for! It’s worth a trip to Helmsley just for the food - just remember to book, it's very popular!
For portraits we got to go to Helmsley Walled Garden. The peaceful, very pretty garden is run by a small independent charity and it's an absolute pleasure to be in. Carla & Sam opted for our Super8 add-on (read more about it here) and we let them both loose with the camera. The results are more than we could have hoped for! They both really got into it and had so much fun. The Super8 footage woven into their film really adds to the timeless feel of their whole day.
We then all made our way back to their guests where we started to see some of the incredible details that made up Carla & Sam’s wedding decor. There was a fabric welcome board telling us that we were in the correct place, personalised tin can alley, lawn games, a polaroid seating plan . . . everywhere you looked was just gorgeous! The long tables had beautiful flowers, individual translucent menus and hand-made clay place names.
Sam is a skilled craftsman and makes guitars, check his work out here, so, naturally, selecting music for the big day was very important! During the day we were serenaded with the talented [insert guitarist’s name here and then something about the band].
We heard some brilliant speeches and the local chickens even wandered around to have a listen! In the film you’ll hear Carla tell us that Sam had been threatening to wear a four piece denim suit (half joking, we think!?), so she had matching denim jackets personalised with their names on which she gave to Sam during her speech.
The gorgeous morning light continued all day and after everyone had eaten we managed to quickly sneak the two lovebirds away in their matching denim jackets to take advantage of it! To be honest I think they both forgot we were there, they were just running around, laughing, admiring each other’s new jackets and generally being mad cute with each other!
Once it started to get dark the vibe definitely shifted to ‘party mode.’ There were face painters: think summer-festival rather than 6-year-old-birthday-party, glow sticks, giant sunglasses and confetti cannons during the first dance. Everyone certainly got into the spirit of things!
The whole day made us smile from start to finish, our cheeks were hurting by the end of it! We were beaming all the way home, helped by the pre-made up mix ups absolutely stuffed with all the best sweets that were by the door on the way out!
We got to spend the day working alongside one of our favourite people in the world, Sally T (she's mint and photographed our wedding) and we also met the lovely and super talented Freya Raby for the first time too.
Charlotte’s favourite moment from this film: when we gave the Super8 camera to Carla, Sam has the bouquet and is being all VOGUE about it

Craig’s favourite moment from this film: the smile on Carla’s face just before she gets out of the car at the church that we see through the car window - no nerves showing, just a truly, truly happy bride ready to marry the love of her life
