Super8 Footage

Are you looking for a way to make sure your wedding film remains timeless? What better way to do that than with the gorgeous footage from a Super8 camera? We love that Super8 adds a tactile feeling to your wedding film. The grain, the way the colours come out and all of the subtle imperfections, to us, make it feel perfect! Read below to find out what exactly is it and how we, as wedding videographers, use Super8 in a wedding film.

Firstly, what is Super8? Super8 is film that captures 24 photographs, or frames, a second. The camera that we use doesn't record any sound, it creates an olden-days silent movie! The cameras are lightweight and fairly straightforward to use. You pick it up, set up your focus and press the trigger. When you do you hear that wonderful, difficult to describe, noise of the camera.

The result, when the time comes and we get to see it, is a beautifully soft and grainy image that can only come from a Super8 camera! There are filters that try to replicate it, but it's not the same as the real deal, the tangible film that you can physically touch.

Because of the relative ease of use they make a great addition to a wedding day! The cameras are no problem to carry around, which is a big bonus when you factor in carrying a digital camera too and anything else that your videographer may need. But the main thing is that it adds a timeless feeling to your wedding day, one that's really tricky to put into words. A lovely wave of nostalgia washes over you when you watch the footage back. Heaven!

Making the most of your Super8 footage:

Book it at least 2 weeks before your wedding day to make sure that your videographer can order the film in time

Listen out for the sound of the trigger, such a satisfying noise

To help with the timeless look of your Super8 footage put your phone down! All of your important people are with you and you don't need to scroll on your wedding day

The footage can't be watched back, so trust the process and just relax into the wonderful wedding day that you have planned

Delayed gratification:

It's not an instant reward, you have to send the film off to be developed, like you used to have to wait for your holiday photos! We love that delay in seeing the images, it feels like Christmas day when we get the scans back.

Because it’s not instant and we are limited with how many rolls of film we bring to a wedding, we have to be really deliberate with our choices of what to shoot, which makes everything feel more intentional.

The whole process feels good in the instant-gratification world that we live in. It’s fascinating to think about film strip that is real and not stored somewhere in the digital world.

One of our extras is Super8 footage. You can add this into your package either at the time of booking or up to a couple of weeks beforehand so that we have time to order it.

We use Super8 on a wedding day for different things. On a morning we love to use it to capture detail shots or the way the light hits your beautifully presented tables all set perfectly for dinner later on. It's really fun way to shoot your confetti too, making this moment of people cheering and showering you with love frozen in time. The best use of Super8 on a wedding day, in our opinion, is when you go for your portraits! We love the way it adds even more romance to your couples shots. What could be better than feeling like you're in your very own Hollywood film?? If you're up for it filming each other using it is an amazing way to have a hand in making your own wedding film too!

The whole process gives you an appreciation for old films, a glimpse into the way that they're made. We're big fans of Super8. You get that old-movie look that's rough around the edges, flattering and unique to Super8. It's pure magic.
